How can camp benefit our young
people spiritually?
2
00:00:03,680 --> 00:00:05,560
Let's take a look at that in
just a SEC.
3
00:00:06,160 --> 00:00:09,080
Welcome to the show.
I'm Daniel Dalp and this is for
4
00:00:09,080 --> 00:00:12,360
your Sunday morning drive.
The short podcast with the goal
5
00:00:12,360 --> 00:00:15,960
of providing some motivation,
Dr. and encouragement on your
6
00:00:15,960 --> 00:00:19,560
way to worship and helping you
to recenter your mind on those
7
00:00:19,560 --> 00:00:22,280
spiritual things on a hectic
Sunday morning.
8
00:00:22,480 --> 00:00:25,960
Today our guest is Tricia
Vaughn, and since you can read
9
00:00:25,960 --> 00:00:28,600
the episode title, you know
she's going to share some
10
00:00:28,600 --> 00:00:30,960
thoughts about Western Kentucky
Youth Camp.
11
00:00:30,960 --> 00:00:35,200
If you're familiar with WKYC,
then more likely than not, when
12
00:00:35,200 --> 00:00:37,760
you think of camp, Tricia's name
comes to mind.
13
00:00:37,800 --> 00:00:43,480
Tricia loves camp and she loves
the God that camp helps young
14
00:00:43,480 --> 00:00:46,200
people get to know.
She serves as the campaign
15
00:00:46,200 --> 00:00:50,880
director for WKYC and does a ton
behind the scenes to help it
16
00:00:50,880 --> 00:00:52,400
grow.
And you may be thinking to
17
00:00:52,400 --> 00:00:56,040
yourself, it's only February.
Summer is a world away.
18
00:00:56,160 --> 00:01:00,560
Well, fair enough, but I did
want to let you know that this
19
00:01:00,560 --> 00:01:04,000
year camp registration does open
on March the 2nd.
20
00:01:04,200 --> 00:01:08,160
Now if you are interested in
attending or sending your young
21
00:01:08,160 --> 00:01:12,520
people to camp, I've put all the
good details on how to register
22
00:01:12,520 --> 00:01:14,280
in the show notes of today's
episode.
23
00:01:14,320 --> 00:01:17,880
And if you'd like to donate to
Western Kentucky Youth Camp to
24
00:01:17,880 --> 00:01:20,560
help them in their mission of
building strong Christians,
25
00:01:20,560 --> 00:01:22,920
well, that info is going to be
in there as well.
26
00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:25,320
Take a look at it.
Well, that's enough for me,
27
00:01:25,440 --> 00:01:27,280
Tricia.
Thank you for joining us.
28
00:01:27,560 --> 00:01:30,640
I'm so thankful that you did.
Let's go ahead and get the show
29
00:01:30,640 --> 00:01:34,640
on the road.
This is episode 96, WKYC.
30
00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:44,120
Let's go to church.
Are we there yet?
31
00:01:57,120 --> 00:02:00,040
Western Kentucky Youth Camp is
deeply personal to me.
32
00:02:00,120 --> 00:02:03,280
It's not just the heartbeat of
my own summer experience.
33
00:02:03,280 --> 00:02:05,480
It's the medium through which
God gave me the biggest
34
00:02:05,480 --> 00:02:08,199
blessings of my life.
Growing up, I was the only
35
00:02:08,199 --> 00:02:10,919
person in my grade that attended
my small church.
36
00:02:10,919 --> 00:02:13,280
The church was a tremendous
blessing in my life.
37
00:02:13,360 --> 00:02:15,880
I loved how the church was
committed to New Testament
38
00:02:15,880 --> 00:02:18,960
principles and also the
importance of intergenerational
39
00:02:18,960 --> 00:02:21,480
living.
I had friendships with everyone.
40
00:02:21,480 --> 00:02:24,360
This was deeply formative and I
do think we've lost something in
41
00:02:24,360 --> 00:02:27,040
our culture by not having those
kinds of relationships.
42
00:02:27,280 --> 00:02:30,800
Western Kentucky Youth Camp gave
me a place to land, especially
43
00:02:30,800 --> 00:02:34,360
in my teens, with people of my
own age who had questions and
44
00:02:34,360 --> 00:02:37,680
were going through the same life
experiences in real time as me.
45
00:02:37,720 --> 00:02:41,400
It also gave me others in
different seasons of life too.
46
00:02:41,400 --> 00:02:43,960
People who had been through hard
things and lived to tell the
47
00:02:43,960 --> 00:02:46,320
tale.
People who had wisdom to offer
48
00:02:46,320 --> 00:02:49,400
and friendship to give that were
outside of my normal circles.
49
00:02:49,520 --> 00:02:52,800
I remember going to camp since
Pee Wee Weekend and the epic
50
00:02:52,800 --> 00:02:54,800
water balloon fights of
Elementary Week.
51
00:02:54,800 --> 00:02:56,920
I enjoyed my middle years at
camp too.
52
00:02:57,120 --> 00:03:00,600
Teen Week was unique because
that year I had to go alone.
53
00:03:00,720 --> 00:03:03,680
I walked into camp not feeling
like I had a relationship with
54
00:03:03,680 --> 00:03:06,600
anyone there because my usual
crew was not present.
55
00:03:06,680 --> 00:03:09,920
I made a promise to myself to
put myself out there no matter
56
00:03:09,920 --> 00:03:12,880
how uncomfortable or nervous I
felt in the moment, and I'm
57
00:03:12,880 --> 00:03:15,520
really glad I did.
I have lifelong friendships
58
00:03:15,520 --> 00:03:18,000
because of the connections I
made with other campers,
59
00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:20,320
counselors and staff.
The Washington Ave.
60
00:03:20,320 --> 00:03:23,360
Church of Christ cabin took me
in like I was one of their own.
61
00:03:23,560 --> 00:03:25,240
It was like we had never missed
a beat.
62
00:03:25,280 --> 00:03:28,800
I will always remember their
hospital at camp and making me
63
00:03:28,800 --> 00:03:31,960
feel loved and valued.
I have my husband because of
64
00:03:32,000 --> 00:03:34,240
WKYC.
The camp brings youth groups
65
00:03:34,240 --> 00:03:38,360
from all over Western Kentucky
and Nashville, TN area into the
66
00:03:38,360 --> 00:03:40,360
fold.
I was baptized at camp.
67
00:03:40,680 --> 00:03:43,760
My parents were caretakers there
for nearly six years.
68
00:03:43,760 --> 00:03:47,200
My Sister Nancy and I joke that
we could be poster children of
69
00:03:47,400 --> 00:03:51,880
WKYC because we owe it so much.
These days I'm on the other side
70
00:03:51,880 --> 00:03:54,480
of things that can't.
I'm often behind the scenes
71
00:03:54,480 --> 00:03:57,440
helping the board execute on
day-to-day functions and working
72
00:03:57,440 --> 00:04:00,360
to improve operational
excellence, capacity, and
73
00:04:00,360 --> 00:04:02,840
communication with families,
donors, and the campers
74
00:04:02,840 --> 00:04:06,000
themselves.
Like many camps, WKYC was
75
00:04:06,000 --> 00:04:10,080
founded in the early 1960s.
Nineteen 63 to be exact.
76
00:04:10,080 --> 00:04:14,160
What started from humble
beginnings with around 250 kids
77
00:04:14,160 --> 00:04:17,959
in attendance over 1 summer has
grown into an organization
78
00:04:17,959 --> 00:04:21,959
impacting more than 1300 kids
from nearly 20 states.
79
00:04:21,959 --> 00:04:24,680
So why camping and why Christian
camping?
80
00:04:24,720 --> 00:04:27,800
I think the book by Jonathan
Haidt, The Anxious Generation
81
00:04:27,800 --> 00:04:30,000
offers a lot of the answers
we're looking for.
82
00:04:30,040 --> 00:04:31,560
Hates.
Research shows there was
83
00:04:31,560 --> 00:04:34,120
something he coined the great
rewiring.
84
00:04:34,120 --> 00:04:38,480
So around 2010 to 2015 there was
a major shift in childhood
85
00:04:38,480 --> 00:04:41,000
development.
We had moved from a play based
86
00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:43,480
childhood.
So think unsupervised play
87
00:04:43,480 --> 00:04:46,360
outside, riding your bikes until
the streetlights came on at
88
00:04:46,360 --> 00:04:50,240
night and real world social
interactions to a phone based
89
00:04:50,240 --> 00:04:53,520
childhood dominated by
smartphones, iPads and social
90
00:04:53,520 --> 00:04:55,400
media.
So not only do you have
91
00:04:55,400 --> 00:04:58,880
helicopter or lawn mower parents
overprotecting their kids
92
00:04:58,880 --> 00:05:02,480
physically, you also have under
protection on the Internet.
93
00:05:02,480 --> 00:05:05,720
This has absolutely fueled the
mental health crisis in our
94
00:05:05,720 --> 00:05:07,560
children.
They're more anxious, they're
95
00:05:07,560 --> 00:05:10,280
more depressed, they're
experiencing self harm and
96
00:05:10,280 --> 00:05:12,960
suicide at alarming rates.
Not to mention the social
97
00:05:12,960 --> 00:05:15,680
comparison and isolation.
They've never been more
98
00:05:15,680 --> 00:05:19,040
connected virtually and yet so
alone in real life.
99
00:05:19,040 --> 00:05:22,920
Camp is a way to restore that
lost play based experience.
100
00:05:22,920 --> 00:05:26,800
I think everything about WKYC is
the opposite of the phone based
101
00:05:26,800 --> 00:05:28,960
child.
You have a rustic natural
102
00:05:28,960 --> 00:05:32,840
setting, a device free zone,
kids in groups whether that's in
103
00:05:32,840 --> 00:05:35,760
their cabins or on their teams,
and you have free play.
104
00:05:35,800 --> 00:05:39,200
All of these things help wire
kids brains to handle fears,
105
00:05:39,200 --> 00:05:41,720
assess risk, bounce back from
setbacks.
106
00:05:41,720 --> 00:05:45,080
We know that these things help
reduce anxiety by fostering
107
00:05:45,080 --> 00:05:47,880
independence and helping with
emotional regulation.
108
00:05:47,960 --> 00:05:51,040
Let them figure it out.
Kids are also learning social
109
00:05:51,040 --> 00:05:53,080
norms through face to face
interaction.
110
00:05:53,080 --> 00:05:56,440
They're learning independence
and maturity. 30 years ago,
111
00:05:56,440 --> 00:06:00,680
asking to mop their cabin floor
or dry dishes was not unusual.
112
00:06:00,680 --> 00:06:03,360
Today we have campers who've
never done a chore in their
113
00:06:03,360 --> 00:06:05,840
lives do chores for the first
time here.
114
00:06:05,920 --> 00:06:08,520
These teach responsibility in a
safe setting.
115
00:06:08,600 --> 00:06:11,720
They help kids transition from
dependence to autonomy.
116
00:06:11,720 --> 00:06:15,120
We also have campers say how
much they love being phone free
117
00:06:15,120 --> 00:06:17,120
at camp.
They realize how big of a weight
118
00:06:17,120 --> 00:06:20,480
phones are psychologically.
Camp offers a clean break for a
119
00:06:20,480 --> 00:06:23,120
week that allows them to focus,
keep their attention on
120
00:06:23,120 --> 00:06:25,880
something longer than a 10
second reel, and they return
121
00:06:25,880 --> 00:06:28,280
home rested despite not sleeping
as much.
122
00:06:28,320 --> 00:06:30,640
Their moods are better, their
focus is better, and their
123
00:06:30,640 --> 00:06:33,480
habits are rewired to live in an
analog world.
124
00:06:33,480 --> 00:06:36,560
At camp, we're committed to
analog living, to touching
125
00:06:36,560 --> 00:06:39,720
grass, to being in nature.
These things make camp different
126
00:06:39,720 --> 00:06:43,640
from the regular experience.
But what makes WKYC stand out
127
00:06:43,640 --> 00:06:46,560
the most is its culture.
Camp is full of staff who
128
00:06:46,560 --> 00:06:49,640
volunteer their time.
On any given summer, we have up
129
00:06:49,640 --> 00:06:53,160
to 530 people who donate their
time to us.
130
00:06:53,160 --> 00:06:56,360
They love camp so much because
of the message that it shares
131
00:06:56,360 --> 00:07:00,800
with children and other staff,
that Jesus saves us, that Jesus
132
00:07:00,800 --> 00:07:04,000
is the one in whom we can put
our trust and we find rest in
133
00:07:04,000 --> 00:07:06,080
Him.
They want to offer campers those
134
00:07:06,080 --> 00:07:09,320
same experiences that they had.
The culture truly is
135
00:07:09,320 --> 00:07:11,960
exceptional.
It's felt, it's compelling.
136
00:07:11,960 --> 00:07:15,120
It's why we do what we do.
So many people describe it as
137
00:07:15,120 --> 00:07:18,120
heaven on earth.
There is absolutely no better
138
00:07:18,120 --> 00:07:21,040
way to spend your summer.
We've made a lot of improvements
139
00:07:21,040 --> 00:07:24,040
over the last few years.
We've updated our cabins to
140
00:07:24,200 --> 00:07:26,720
temperature controlled cabins
with bathrooms.
141
00:07:26,720 --> 00:07:29,600
They feel like a luxury compared
to the original cabins of the
142
00:07:29,600 --> 00:07:31,560
60s.
We're also building a new
143
00:07:31,560 --> 00:07:34,640
apartment style complex that
offers rooms sleeping up to four
144
00:07:34,640 --> 00:07:37,040
to six people.
They give families with babies
145
00:07:37,040 --> 00:07:40,000
the ability to have privacy.
It also helps our ministry for
146
00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:43,080
kids with special needs.
If the caregiver is a father and
147
00:07:43,080 --> 00:07:46,120
he wants his daughter to attend
Wonderfully Made Weekend and he
148
00:07:46,120 --> 00:07:49,200
needs to be present with her,
they can have their own space.
149
00:07:49,360 --> 00:07:51,720
Previously that would have been
not possible.
150
00:07:51,760 --> 00:07:56,600
We're only about $150,000 away
from our $800,000 goal for that
151
00:07:56,600 --> 00:07:58,720
project.
You can donate today at
152
00:07:59,000 --> 00:08:02,120
wkyc.org.
Tricia shared some fantastic
153
00:08:02,120 --> 00:08:04,880
thoughts about a great place for
our young people to spend the
154
00:08:04,880 --> 00:08:07,040
summer.
Now it's time to hear yours.
155
00:08:07,080 --> 00:08:10,640
Our discussion questions for
this week are what opportunities
156
00:08:10,640 --> 00:08:14,960
can we create to help introduce
our young people to Jesus?
157
00:08:14,960 --> 00:08:18,880
What are some experience that
you cherish at camp or not from
158
00:08:18,880 --> 00:08:22,280
your childhood that have
contributed to your faith today?
159
00:08:22,320 --> 00:08:27,560
And what things can we
prioritize or deprioritize in
160
00:08:27,560 --> 00:08:31,160
order to ensure our children
have the chance to develop
161
00:08:31,160 --> 00:08:33,240
spiritually?
Hey, thanks for listening.
162
00:08:33,360 --> 00:08:35,440

In 2019, WKYC named Marion, KY native Trisha Vaughn as its Campaign Director.
Vaughn’s appointment is an outgrowth of Western Kentucky Youth Camp’s (WKYC) long-range envisioning efforts. As Campaign Director, she works with the Board of Directors to define and create the future of the camp by driving critical transformation projects and organizational branding efforts. Vaughn also provides administrative support to the Board.
WKYC is a second home for Vaughn, whose parents, Joan and the late David Maclin, served as caretakers of the property. She attended camp annually with her sister as both a camper and later a counselor for different summer sessions and retreats.
Vaughn most recently completed assignments as a consultant for Concord Rd. Church of Christ, as Strategic Planning Director for Lone Oak church of Christ, and was the Campaign Relations Manager for the Cleveland Zoological Society in Cleveland, OH. She selectively serves as a freelance consultant for different churches and organizations. Her most important role is being a mom!
Trisha earned a Master of Arts in English and graduated Summa Cum Laude with degrees in English and Political Science from the University of Louisville, where she was a McConnell Scholar for leadership. Trisha is married to Derek Vaughn, an Orthopedic Surgeon and a WKYC alumnus. They have one daughter.
