BONUS: Get To Know Leo McKinely

An interview with our guest Leo Mckinely.
Hey! I'm trying something new today! Going forward, I'm moving the guest interviews to their own bonus episode slot on Fridays. That leaves the Sunday episodes shorter and more focused on encouragement. Let me know what you think!
Our guest on Sunday will be Leo McKinely. Leo is a teacher at Paducah Tilghman Highschool in Paducah, KY and a fantastic preacher of the Gospel! Give him a warm welcome!
Leo has endowed a scholarship in memory of his sister who passed to breast cancer. If anyone feels called to donate to the scholarship, monies can be sent to Regions Bank earmarked for the Heather Price Memorial Fund.
See you Sunday!
1
00:00:00,080 --> 00:00:04,280
Hey, it's me and it's Friday and
I know you weren't expecting
2
00:00:04,280 --> 00:00:07,360
something from me and your feed
today, but I'm trying something
3
00:00:07,360 --> 00:00:09,760
a little new.
I've recently been doing some
4
00:00:09,760 --> 00:00:13,400
short interviews on our guest
episodes to let you get to know
5
00:00:13,400 --> 00:00:17,560
our guests a little better.
However, I want to be sure that
6
00:00:17,560 --> 00:00:21,920
the Sunday episodes are really
accomplishing what the podcast
7
00:00:21,920 --> 00:00:25,600
is intended to do, which is
prepare minds for worship.
8
00:00:25,840 --> 00:00:29,720
So I'm not sure that Sundays are
the best time for those
9
00:00:29,720 --> 00:00:31,800
interviews.
Now, I don't know if the many
10
00:00:31,800 --> 00:00:34,800
interviews will stick around and
become a permanent fixture of
11
00:00:34,800 --> 00:00:38,600
the show, but when I'm able to
fit them into the schedule, I'm
12
00:00:38,600 --> 00:00:41,840
going to plug those in the
podcast feed on Fridays.
13
00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:45,800
That way we can get to know our
guests on Friday and get to know
14
00:00:45,800 --> 00:00:47,840
the Lord on his day.
Clear as mud.
15
00:00:48,160 --> 00:00:51,320
Great, I thought.
So of course, if you have any
16
00:00:51,320 --> 00:00:54,560
feedback, send it my way.
I'd love to hear from you.
17
00:00:54,800 --> 00:00:58,480
Anyway, our guest on Sunday will
be Leo McKinley.
18
00:00:58,520 --> 00:01:02,600
I first met Leo over a decade
ago when I was trying out for a
19
00:01:02,600 --> 00:01:06,120
congregation in his area, and
we've kept in touch to varying
20
00:01:06,120 --> 00:01:09,680
degrees ever since.
And after learning a little bit
21
00:01:09,680 --> 00:01:12,640
more about him, I know you'll
appreciate him like I do.
22
00:01:12,680 --> 00:01:16,920
So without any further ado,
here's my chat with brother Leo
23
00:01:16,920 --> 00:01:20,400
McKinley.
Hey Leo, welcome to the show.
24
00:01:20,400 --> 00:01:23,000
I'm I'm excited to finally get
some time to talk.
25
00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:24,960
Why don't you tell us a little
bit about yourself?
26
00:01:25,040 --> 00:01:26,560
Thank you for having me, by the
way.
27
00:01:26,560 --> 00:01:29,960
I'm honored to be here as a part
of your podcast.
28
00:01:29,960 --> 00:01:32,800
I know you've had some very
impressive people here.
29
00:01:33,160 --> 00:01:38,000
And so I'm not sure if I quite
live up to that same level of
30
00:01:38,000 --> 00:01:40,920
name.
I went to breed Hardiman for
31
00:01:40,920 --> 00:01:44,880
college down in Henderson, TN.
You know, there you have to take
32
00:01:44,960 --> 00:01:49,840
one Bible class every semester.
And so I have what, what amounts
33
00:01:49,840 --> 00:01:53,720
to close to a minor in Bible,
but I never really intended to
34
00:01:53,720 --> 00:01:55,960
preach.
I just got invited to preach one
35
00:01:55,960 --> 00:01:58,520
time somewhere.
And it's just fun from there
36
00:01:58,600 --> 00:02:01,800
that I, I'm preach just about
every week, but at a different
37
00:02:01,800 --> 00:02:05,240
congregation.
I'm not at a set congregation
38
00:02:05,240 --> 00:02:07,520
every every week.
And that's more of the space
39
00:02:07,520 --> 00:02:10,880
that I like because I'm a full
time math teacher at Paducah
40
00:02:10,880 --> 00:02:15,080
Tillman High School in Paducah,
KY, and I've been doing that for
41
00:02:15,280 --> 00:02:17,760
18 years.
So just completed 18 years.
42
00:02:17,800 --> 00:02:20,320
I've been the department chair
since 2018.
43
00:02:20,440 --> 00:02:24,000
And so that that keeps me busy,
but I'm grateful that I still
44
00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:25,920
get to scratch the edge of
preaching as well.
45
00:02:25,920 --> 00:02:28,200
Sure.
Leo, on that note, has been
46
00:02:28,200 --> 00:02:32,000
nominated for and the recipient
of several awards for being an
47
00:02:32,000 --> 00:02:34,840
outstanding educator.
So, Leo, my first question for
48
00:02:34,840 --> 00:02:37,640
you is what does it feel like to
be the best teacher in the
49
00:02:37,640 --> 00:02:38,160
world?
Yeah.
50
00:02:39,480 --> 00:02:42,160
You'll have to ask somebody else
that question that actually fits
51
00:02:42,160 --> 00:02:44,880
that that title, but you know,
like it.
52
00:02:45,040 --> 00:02:49,160
It's a blessing to be able to
teach my My dad passed away a
53
00:02:49,160 --> 00:02:55,160
year ago and he was illiterate.
And so I looked at how that
54
00:02:55,160 --> 00:02:57,640
brought a lot of challenges to
his life.
55
00:02:57,640 --> 00:03:03,520
Being able to to read or write
really brought some challenges.
56
00:03:03,760 --> 00:03:07,600
And so being able to teach, and
although I'm not teaching kids
57
00:03:07,600 --> 00:03:09,640
how to read or write at the high
school level, especially
58
00:03:09,640 --> 00:03:13,480
teaching math, being able to
teach and provide people with
59
00:03:13,520 --> 00:03:18,760
with knowledge that my dad was
not able to gain is is what
60
00:03:19,440 --> 00:03:22,280
allowed my heart to fall in love
with teaching.
61
00:03:22,480 --> 00:03:25,160
Wow, it's, it's amazing.
You know, it's, it's really
62
00:03:25,160 --> 00:03:26,960
interesting how that came full
circle for you.
63
00:03:27,240 --> 00:03:30,520
Absolutely.
You know, and then on my mom's
64
00:03:30,520 --> 00:03:35,160
side, my mom did not go to high
school as as a student.
65
00:03:35,160 --> 00:03:39,400
She quit in 8th grade.
And so it's really neat for
66
00:03:39,640 --> 00:03:43,800
them.
They've told me this, to have a
67
00:03:43,840 --> 00:03:47,680
son that that's teaching.
Well, that, that's excellent.
68
00:03:47,680 --> 00:03:50,080
Thank you so much for sharing
that with us, Leo.
69
00:03:50,080 --> 00:03:53,000
On that same note, we see
teachers around the country that
70
00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:56,120
seem to be exiting the
profession for a variety of
71
00:03:56,120 --> 00:03:58,600
reasons.
What keeps you going back and
72
00:03:58,600 --> 00:04:01,240
keeps you passionate about
educating young people?
73
00:04:01,360 --> 00:04:05,160
It's the kids, you know, and,
and you're so right, there are
74
00:04:05,160 --> 00:04:08,480
studies out there that suggest
that, you know, most people,
75
00:04:08,480 --> 00:04:12,960
they get out of education do so
within the first five years that
76
00:04:12,960 --> 00:04:16,480
they've been in it.
And so I've, I had some
77
00:04:16,480 --> 00:04:18,399
struggles those first few years
as well.
78
00:04:18,399 --> 00:04:22,880
But then as you sink your teeth
into it more, you, you get to a
79
00:04:22,880 --> 00:04:25,680
point where it's, it's
economically, it's not even
80
00:04:25,680 --> 00:04:28,360
smart to get out of it because
you don't want to start a new
81
00:04:28,360 --> 00:04:30,920
career at let's say 30 years old
or something.
82
00:04:31,040 --> 00:04:35,520
But beyond that, being able to
help students see that light
83
00:04:35,520 --> 00:04:39,720
bulb go off, being able to
impart knowledge to kids, being
84
00:04:39,720 --> 00:04:44,800
able to help them, help them
achieve things that they didn't
85
00:04:45,040 --> 00:04:48,360
think were possible.
All of that inspires me.
86
00:04:49,120 --> 00:04:53,400
Just being, being involved in
the kids lives, you know, as a,
87
00:04:53,440 --> 00:04:57,000
as a 40 year old person that
doesn't have any kids, I look at
88
00:04:57,000 --> 00:05:00,480
a lot of these kids as my own
kids and have been fortunate to
89
00:05:00,520 --> 00:05:04,120
drop some of them off at college
to let some of them stay at my
90
00:05:04,120 --> 00:05:06,280
house whenever they didn't have
another place to stay.
91
00:05:06,280 --> 00:05:09,040
So honestly, what keeps me in it
is the kids.
92
00:05:09,040 --> 00:05:12,160
There are some rough days, but
whenever you remember what your
93
00:05:12,160 --> 00:05:16,040
why is, it's easy to keep going
and through all of the
94
00:05:16,400 --> 00:05:18,120
frustrations that come.
Yeah.
95
00:05:18,120 --> 00:05:21,880
And I see you being tagged on
Facebook and other platforms by
96
00:05:21,880 --> 00:05:24,840
a lot of those former students.
And what I've really found
97
00:05:24,840 --> 00:05:28,120
encouraging about that, the
common denominator is the
98
00:05:28,120 --> 00:05:29,800
positive impact that you've had
on them.
99
00:05:29,880 --> 00:05:33,160
You know, can you speak to that
a little bit and say, you know,
100
00:05:33,360 --> 00:05:37,040
I guess what does it mean for
you to have them in a long
101
00:05:37,040 --> 00:05:41,080
lasting way, look back and see
the impact you've made actively
102
00:05:41,080 --> 00:05:43,320
in their lives?
You know, that's a hard question
103
00:05:43,320 --> 00:05:47,200
for me to answer, Daniel, simply
because I try not to sit back
104
00:05:47,200 --> 00:05:50,880
and think about it, you know,
because I don't want to get
105
00:05:50,880 --> 00:05:55,280
haughty or, or think that I'm
doing more than what I actually
106
00:05:55,280 --> 00:05:58,400
am doing.
It is very gracious of the
107
00:05:58,400 --> 00:06:02,520
students that have that have
come and kept in touch with me
108
00:06:02,520 --> 00:06:05,600
or tagged me in pictures.
I was just out on the other two
109
00:06:05,600 --> 00:06:08,960
days ago and I ran into two, two
different students in two
110
00:06:08,960 --> 00:06:11,440
different instances within a
matter of 30 minutes of each
111
00:06:11,440 --> 00:06:13,520
other.
And we were able to have a have
112
00:06:13,520 --> 00:06:16,520
a long conversation about, you
know, just remembering yesterday
113
00:06:16,520 --> 00:06:20,680
about things and, and whatnot.
Being able to have some
114
00:06:20,680 --> 00:06:24,280
semblance of an impact on them
is important because at the end
115
00:06:24,280 --> 00:06:28,920
of the day, a lot of these kids
don't have male role models.
116
00:06:28,920 --> 00:06:33,600
And so being able to fill in the
gap for some of them has been
117
00:06:33,600 --> 00:06:36,600
wonderful.
But honestly, the and I'm not
118
00:06:36,600 --> 00:06:39,880
trying to be rude to you, but I
feel like the, the framing of
119
00:06:39,880 --> 00:06:42,960
your, of your question is a
little bit backwards because I
120
00:06:42,960 --> 00:06:47,320
feel like I'm bidding by being
able to be in their lives and
121
00:06:47,320 --> 00:06:50,960
them to include me in it.
I've had, I've had several
122
00:06:50,960 --> 00:06:55,200
students that have asked me to
perform their, their wedding
123
00:06:55,920 --> 00:06:59,200
that have, you know, kept me in
touch whenever they've had kids
124
00:06:59,200 --> 00:07:01,520
being born.
And, you know, that's, that's
125
00:07:01,520 --> 00:07:04,440
all things where I feel like
they're impacting my life more
126
00:07:04,440 --> 00:07:07,360
than I'm impacting theirs.
And maybe it's a reciprocal
127
00:07:07,360 --> 00:07:12,000
thing there, but I'm I'm
certainly not going to try to
128
00:07:12,000 --> 00:07:15,320
take any, any credit.
I've I've been blessed more than
129
00:07:15,320 --> 00:07:19,600
other teachers in the sense that
my entire career I've never been
130
00:07:19,600 --> 00:07:22,960
married and I haven't had kids.
So whereas other teachers have
131
00:07:22,960 --> 00:07:28,360
had to spend time with their
personal family, I've been able
132
00:07:28,360 --> 00:07:32,560
to stretch myself out some and
be it more of their more of my
133
00:07:32,560 --> 00:07:35,960
students games and activities
and and go to college events
134
00:07:35,960 --> 00:07:38,880
with them after they leave high
school and whatnot.
135
00:07:39,160 --> 00:07:42,480
So I've I've been blessed.
I think that's an awesome way to
136
00:07:42,480 --> 00:07:45,080
think of it and I appreciate you
bringing out that perspective.
137
00:07:45,080 --> 00:07:48,560
It, you know, so often I think
we as the, the church can be
138
00:07:48,560 --> 00:07:52,880
really backwards in that and we
can sometimes view, well, the
139
00:07:52,920 --> 00:07:57,240
ultimate fulfillment of life is
marriedness and kids.
140
00:07:57,400 --> 00:08:00,520
And we kind of lose sight of,
well, there is an impact outside
141
00:08:00,520 --> 00:08:03,400
of that that I can have.
And it's really neat to be able
142
00:08:03,400 --> 00:08:05,240
to see you have that impact on
those kids.
143
00:08:05,400 --> 00:08:07,080
Absolutely.
I was just thinking the other
144
00:08:07,080 --> 00:08:10,800
day about that because I just
turned 40 a week ago today.
145
00:08:10,840 --> 00:08:13,760
And I remember thinking to
myself, you know, being upset
146
00:08:13,760 --> 00:08:16,760
and frustrated that I don't have
any kids.
147
00:08:16,840 --> 00:08:22,000
And then it dawned on me, I've
had 2000 kids at this point over
148
00:08:22,000 --> 00:08:27,640
the course of an 18 year career.
And so like I've that's, that's
149
00:08:27,640 --> 00:08:31,200
a lot of kids I've had.
That's that's excellent.
150
00:08:31,240 --> 00:08:34,080
One more question for you before
I let you go today, Leo.
151
00:08:34,159 --> 00:08:37,960
What encouragement do you have
for those former students or
152
00:08:38,080 --> 00:08:40,559
other believers and fellow
educators?
153
00:08:40,600 --> 00:08:44,440
Oh goodness.
You know, I've, I've tried to
154
00:08:45,320 --> 00:08:50,160
invite many of these kids to
church over the years and
155
00:08:50,160 --> 00:08:53,520
several have come.
And that's what matters the most
156
00:08:53,520 --> 00:08:56,120
to me.
Because at the end of the day, I
157
00:08:56,120 --> 00:08:59,240
tell my students this on the
last day of school all the time.
158
00:08:59,280 --> 00:09:03,400
You're going to find somebody
who's going to teach math to you
159
00:09:03,520 --> 00:09:07,320
better in a way that you
understand better than I am that
160
00:09:07,320 --> 00:09:09,960
you will not find another
teacher that's going to love you
161
00:09:09,960 --> 00:09:12,880
to the level that I do.
And I hope that that's something
162
00:09:12,880 --> 00:09:17,480
that sticks with these kids, the
ones that I had way back in 2008
163
00:09:17,480 --> 00:09:20,880
whenever I first began, and the
ones that just graduated 2 weeks
164
00:09:20,920 --> 00:09:23,600
ago.
I hope that they all understand
165
00:09:23,600 --> 00:09:28,160
that that love that I have for
them does not dwindle over time.
166
00:09:28,640 --> 00:09:32,440
And as more kids come up, you
know, like sometimes it's easy
167
00:09:32,440 --> 00:09:35,360
to focus on the, on the
periphery of what you have here
168
00:09:35,360 --> 00:09:40,600
in front of you right now.
But like I, I want to remain a
169
00:09:40,600 --> 00:09:44,080
part of their life and I want
them to understand that, you
170
00:09:44,080 --> 00:09:48,520
know, like if, if you leave this
classroom and all I've taught
171
00:09:48,520 --> 00:09:52,400
you is math, I've failed at what
I tried to accomplish because to
172
00:09:52,400 --> 00:09:55,480
me, there's things that are more
important than math, such as
173
00:09:55,480 --> 00:09:59,880
their faith.
Like I, I want to, I want to
174
00:09:59,880 --> 00:10:03,360
have that kind of lasting impact
on these kids.
175
00:10:03,600 --> 00:10:06,640
And I know that teaching at a
public school, it's hard to
176
00:10:06,640 --> 00:10:09,600
bring up faith honestly
sometimes, but there are ways
177
00:10:09,600 --> 00:10:13,600
that you can bring it up with
without, you know, directly
178
00:10:13,600 --> 00:10:17,840
talking about it sometimes.
For instance, whenever we start
179
00:10:17,840 --> 00:10:20,320
the school year, we'll play
icebreaker games.
180
00:10:20,320 --> 00:10:21,960
You know those good to know you
games then.
181
00:10:22,240 --> 00:10:25,000
And I'll just, you know,
casually mention that I've that
182
00:10:25,000 --> 00:10:29,640
I preach and you will not
believe how many times from that
183
00:10:29,640 --> 00:10:33,160
convert from that, like little
short mention that a kid, you
184
00:10:33,160 --> 00:10:37,080
know, months later, years later
even will will say something,
185
00:10:37,360 --> 00:10:42,080
reach out to me about religion.
And that's what matters to me
186
00:10:42,080 --> 00:10:44,000
most.
And that's that's what I want to
187
00:10:44,000 --> 00:10:47,920
leave the kids with is that I
want you to understand math.
188
00:10:47,960 --> 00:10:50,360
I want us to have the best test
scores possible.
189
00:10:50,480 --> 00:10:53,960
But at the end of the day, I
want you to look at me as a
190
00:10:53,960 --> 00:10:58,560
Christian and someone who wants
to connect with you beyond
191
00:10:58,560 --> 00:11:02,120
Paducah Tillman High School, but
to connect with you on something
192
00:11:02,120 --> 00:11:07,440
that is more lasting, which is
our souls and and faith and a
193
00:11:07,440 --> 00:11:09,080
love for God.
Absolutely.
194
00:11:09,080 --> 00:11:11,000
That's an excellent perspective,
man.
195
00:11:11,000 --> 00:11:12,640
Thank you so much for sharing
that with us.
196
00:11:12,640 --> 00:11:15,000
Thank you for taking some time
out of your morning to talk to
197
00:11:15,000 --> 00:11:17,760
me today.
And I, I so appreciate it and I
198
00:11:17,760 --> 00:11:20,480
love you brother, and all the
things that you're doing and the
199
00:11:20,480 --> 00:11:22,960
things that you're about.
I, I count myself blessed to
200
00:11:22,960 --> 00:11:24,200
have met you all day those years
ago.
201
00:11:26,000 --> 00:11:29,160
I appreciate Leo taking some
time to talk to us and I can't
202
00:11:29,160 --> 00:11:31,280
wait to share his thoughts with
you on the Lord's Day.
203
00:11:31,360 --> 00:11:34,000
Thanks for listening.
Thanks for spending some time
204
00:11:34,000 --> 00:11:35,960
with me on a Friday and I'll see
you Sunday.
