What can an interesting world
record teach us about how we run
2
00:00:03,920 --> 00:00:07,040
our spiritual race?
Well, our guest this morning
3
00:00:07,040 --> 00:00:09,640
will tell us all about that here
in a bit.
4
00:00:09,840 --> 00:00:12,960
Welcome to the show.
I'm Daniel Dalp and this is for
5
00:00:12,960 --> 00:00:16,079
your Sunday morning drive where
the short podcast with the goal
6
00:00:16,079 --> 00:00:19,720
of providing some motivation,
Dr. and encouragement on your
7
00:00:19,720 --> 00:00:23,120
way to worship and helping you
recenter your mind on those
8
00:00:23,200 --> 00:00:26,200
spiritual things on a hectic
Sunday morning.
9
00:00:26,280 --> 00:00:29,680
And Speaking of guests, I'm
excited to have Adam Thon with
10
00:00:29,680 --> 00:00:31,800
us here today.
Adam, welcome to the show.
11
00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:35,800
Adam is the minister at the
Central Congregation in Paducah,
12
00:00:35,800 --> 00:00:38,680
KY.
I see you post Adam all the time
13
00:00:38,720 --> 00:00:41,320
about your work and your
excitement for the church and
14
00:00:41,320 --> 00:00:43,240
the Christians there.
Can you tell us a little bit
15
00:00:43,240 --> 00:00:46,160
about yourself and the Central
Congregation and and what makes
16
00:00:46,160 --> 00:00:48,560
it such a special work?
Well, what makes a special work
17
00:00:48,560 --> 00:00:51,200
is of course, the the twofold
thing that nearly any preacher
18
00:00:51,200 --> 00:00:54,560
you expect any preacher to say
is one side of course, is we're
19
00:00:54,560 --> 00:00:56,360
following Jesus.
And the other part is the people
20
00:00:56,360 --> 00:00:59,200
are just wonderful people, but
we're we're blessed to be here.
21
00:00:59,440 --> 00:01:03,000
I'm married to, we have two
children who are young adults
22
00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:04,840
now.
So we're sort of quasi empty
23
00:01:04,840 --> 00:01:07,760
nesters.
And the congregation here at
24
00:01:07,760 --> 00:01:10,040
Central has been just a blessing
to us.
25
00:01:10,040 --> 00:01:14,360
We've been here just shy of
eight years and we we absolutely
26
00:01:14,360 --> 00:01:15,800
love it.
It's a wonderful, wonderful
27
00:01:15,800 --> 00:01:17,160
place and has been for a long
time.
28
00:01:17,280 --> 00:01:20,800
Man, I just wish more people,
especially more ministers and
29
00:01:20,800 --> 00:01:24,320
preachers, could be as positive
and loving about the places
30
00:01:24,320 --> 00:01:26,360
where they serve as I see you
being.
31
00:01:26,360 --> 00:01:29,440
So I think that's a wonderful
thing for your work and for the
32
00:01:29,560 --> 00:01:31,120
the church that you serve at to
see.
33
00:01:31,440 --> 00:01:33,120
And I'm invested.
So I think that's wonderful.
34
00:01:33,320 --> 00:01:36,520
I appreciate that we central has
problems, every congregation
35
00:01:36,520 --> 00:01:39,680
does, but sure, we we can deal
with those internally.
36
00:01:39,880 --> 00:01:42,320
The world needs to see the good,
because there's a whole lot more
37
00:01:42,320 --> 00:01:44,480
good than there is bad.
Amen, Amen.
38
00:01:44,560 --> 00:01:48,200
Adam also has a blog called
Legacy of Faith and it's been
39
00:01:48,200 --> 00:01:52,200
built over the years and I've
read post contributed by you and
40
00:01:52,200 --> 00:01:54,280
your family.
Tell us a little bit more about
41
00:01:54,280 --> 00:01:57,080
Legacy of Faith, where it can be
found, and how long you've been
42
00:01:57,080 --> 00:01:58,600
doing.
It we decided a long time ago,
43
00:01:58,600 --> 00:02:01,560
we had several family blogs and
things we said, Hey, let's just
44
00:02:01,560 --> 00:02:04,760
put these all under one roots.
So I agreed to kind of be the,
45
00:02:04,800 --> 00:02:08,759
the editor and chief bottle
washer and all sorts of thing.
46
00:02:08,800 --> 00:02:11,960
But, but it actually helped in a
way because I was trying to keep
47
00:02:12,000 --> 00:02:14,360
a, A blog for myself writing 3-4
times a week.
48
00:02:14,400 --> 00:02:16,560
And that also cut it down to
where I was just writing once a
49
00:02:16,560 --> 00:02:18,520
week, but editing the other
things.
50
00:02:18,520 --> 00:02:21,720
And so for the I I care when we
started now it's probably been
51
00:02:21,720 --> 00:02:25,200
10 years, maybe more than that.
And I tell people we were
52
00:02:25,200 --> 00:02:27,600
serious.
Our goal was if we could have
53
00:02:27,600 --> 00:02:30,120
500 readers, that would be
beyond anything we could ever,
54
00:02:30,320 --> 00:02:33,560
you know, dream of having.
And, you know, thankfully,
55
00:02:33,560 --> 00:02:36,280
because of good people and
because God just bless the work,
56
00:02:36,280 --> 00:02:39,800
we have blown way past that.
And I forget the numbers now.
57
00:02:39,800 --> 00:02:41,000
It's, it's not, it's not in the
millions.
58
00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:45,720
It's nothing along those lines.
But, but Dad writes every week.
59
00:02:46,760 --> 00:02:49,840
So my nephew Luke Tatum, who's a
youth and family minister in
60
00:02:49,840 --> 00:02:51,920
Virginia, writes every week.
I write every week.
61
00:02:52,280 --> 00:02:56,280
And then one of the wives, they
rotate writes every week.
62
00:02:56,280 --> 00:02:59,760
And every so often be an article
by one of the grandkids or Leah
63
00:02:59,760 --> 00:03:02,240
or someone else just sort of
randomly stuck in there.
64
00:03:02,240 --> 00:03:06,880
And so it's a
legacyoffaith.substack.com and
65
00:03:07,080 --> 00:03:08,800
obviously it's free.
We just love doing it for.
66
00:03:08,800 --> 00:03:10,920
People, I'll make sure that a
link to that is in the show
67
00:03:10,920 --> 00:03:13,800
notes of today's episode and
also on for your Sunday morning
68
00:03:13,800 --> 00:03:17,160
dr.com so people can make sure
to find that and see the great
69
00:03:17,160 --> 00:03:18,760
things that you and your family
are doing.
70
00:03:18,760 --> 00:03:21,720
But Adam, welcome to the show.
I'm so thankful that you decided
71
00:03:21,720 --> 00:03:23,960
to be on this morning.
Got some great thoughts to share
72
00:03:23,960 --> 00:03:25,920
with us coming up.
Let's go ahead and get the show
73
00:03:25,920 --> 00:03:28,320
on the road.
This is episode one O 7.
74
00:03:28,320 --> 00:03:31,560
What to wear while running.
Adam, let's go to church.
75
00:03:38,640 --> 00:03:53,520
Are we there yet?
Some people love running long
76
00:03:53,600 --> 00:03:57,080
distance races.
Others, like me, can hardly
77
00:03:57,080 --> 00:03:58,880
imagine it.
For those who do run those
78
00:03:58,880 --> 00:04:03,000
longer races, 10 KS, half
marathons, even full marathons,
79
00:04:03,080 --> 00:04:05,760
it's something they greatly
enjoy and for the most part,
80
00:04:05,840 --> 00:04:08,360
something they do to feel a
sense of accomplishment.
81
00:04:08,480 --> 00:04:11,400
But talk to those who run those
longer races and they're going
82
00:04:11,400 --> 00:04:14,320
to be able to give you a lot of
tips about how to prepare
83
00:04:14,320 --> 00:04:17,640
safely, about what to do to make
sure you maximize your chances
84
00:04:17,640 --> 00:04:20,600
of running a good time.
Some who are very serious even
85
00:04:20,600 --> 00:04:23,880
talk about the style, the fit,
maybe even the brand of clothing
86
00:04:23,880 --> 00:04:25,960
you should wear.
Well, a woman in Arkansas
87
00:04:26,040 --> 00:04:29,680
recently went against all that
advice, but she did so
88
00:04:29,680 --> 00:04:33,160
intentionally.
In 2013 as a way to help her
89
00:04:33,160 --> 00:04:36,080
lose weight, she began running
and she has kept at it.
90
00:04:36,120 --> 00:04:39,320
And over the intervening years
she has done just that, losing a
91
00:04:39,320 --> 00:04:41,320
lot of weight and growing in her
health journey.
92
00:04:41,440 --> 00:04:45,840
And so in 2025, she decided to
run a half marathon in Fort
93
00:04:45,840 --> 00:04:49,440
Smith, AR, but to run it in a
way that honored her weight loss
94
00:04:49,440 --> 00:04:51,480
journey.
And So what did she do?
95
00:04:51,560 --> 00:04:57,720
She ran the entire race 13.1
miles while wearing 55 T-shirts.
96
00:04:58,160 --> 00:05:01,840
All 55 were layered one on top
of the other so they formed what
97
00:05:01,840 --> 00:05:04,520
sort of looked like a large
cocoon around her body.
98
00:05:04,680 --> 00:05:07,360
And so as she ran, she had all
that weight, but also the
99
00:05:07,360 --> 00:05:10,840
constriction of those T-shirts
all working against her.
100
00:05:11,120 --> 00:05:13,920
But still, though it wasn't a
fantastic time, she finished the
101
00:05:13,920 --> 00:05:18,680
half marathon doing so in 3 1/2
hours, all while wearing 55
102
00:05:18,680 --> 00:05:21,080
T-shirts.
By the way, one reason the story
103
00:05:21,080 --> 00:05:23,760
is just making the rounds in
recent weeks is because it took
104
00:05:23,760 --> 00:05:26,600
that long for her race to be
certified as a world record.
105
00:05:26,640 --> 00:05:30,200
The record for the female who
ran 1/2 marathon while wearing
106
00:05:30,200 --> 00:05:32,640
the most T-shirts.
There really is a world record
107
00:05:32,640 --> 00:05:34,760
for everything.
But there are two things about
108
00:05:34,760 --> 00:05:37,720
her story that got me to
thinking. 1 is the connection to
109
00:05:37,720 --> 00:05:40,560
a passage of scripture we often
cite when we think about running
110
00:05:40,560 --> 00:05:43,400
the Christian race.
Hebrews chapter 12 verses one
111
00:05:43,400 --> 00:05:45,600
through three.
That passage reminds us that we
112
00:05:45,600 --> 00:05:49,480
must lay aside every weight and
the sin which clings so closely
113
00:05:49,480 --> 00:05:52,720
so that we will be able to run
our Christian race with
114
00:05:52,720 --> 00:05:55,080
endurance.
When you watch serious runners,
115
00:05:55,360 --> 00:05:59,040
they do not put on any more
clothing than absolute necessary
116
00:05:59,040 --> 00:06:01,560
because they do not want to be
encumbered at all.
117
00:06:01,840 --> 00:06:03,800
Yet.
How often do we allow sin to
118
00:06:03,800 --> 00:06:06,640
hang around us while we try to
run our spiritual race?
119
00:06:06,680 --> 00:06:10,000
Or how often do we allow things
that aren't necessarily sinful,
120
00:06:10,080 --> 00:06:13,040
but they're holding us back from
doing our very best to stay
121
00:06:13,040 --> 00:06:16,640
right with us?
Our focus, instead, must be on
122
00:06:16,720 --> 00:06:18,920
Jesus.
Exclusively on Jesus, as that
123
00:06:18,920 --> 00:06:22,000
passage reminds us, that we're
to be looking to Him.
124
00:06:22,440 --> 00:06:25,680
Anything that threatens to take
our eyes off Him, we need to set
125
00:06:25,680 --> 00:06:29,080
it aside, or as the Hebrew
writer puts it, lay it aside.
126
00:06:29,200 --> 00:06:31,840
But another observation comes
from an image of the woman in
127
00:06:31,840 --> 00:06:35,320
the race.
Of all those T-shirts wearing 55
128
00:06:35,320 --> 00:06:38,720
T-shirts, the one that was on
the outside was a very simple
129
00:06:38,720 --> 00:06:41,160
white T-shirt that had almost
nothing on it.
130
00:06:41,280 --> 00:06:44,200
The only thing written on the
T-shirt in very small sort of
131
00:06:44,200 --> 00:06:46,600
block lettering was a reference
to a Bible verse.
132
00:06:46,600 --> 00:06:50,280
You see the T-shirt simply read
Colossians 312.
133
00:06:50,520 --> 00:06:53,240
Now if that passage doesn't ring
a bell, that reference doesn't
134
00:06:53,240 --> 00:06:56,400
ring a bell in that verse.
Paul wrote these words, put on
135
00:06:56,400 --> 00:07:00,040
then as God's chosen one's holy
and beloved, compassionate
136
00:07:00,040 --> 00:07:04,120
hearts, kindness, humility,
meekness, and patience.
137
00:07:04,200 --> 00:07:06,680
While we often talk about how
there are things that we need to
138
00:07:06,680 --> 00:07:10,200
shed in order to run our race,
it is equally true that there
139
00:07:10,200 --> 00:07:14,680
are things we not only can put
on, but we must put on if we are
140
00:07:14,680 --> 00:07:17,440
going to run that race in a way
that is faithful to God.
141
00:07:17,600 --> 00:07:20,120
And here's the amazing part.
Those things that God has
142
00:07:20,120 --> 00:07:23,800
demanded that we put on while we
run our race, they don't slow us
143
00:07:23,800 --> 00:07:26,600
down a bit.
In fact, they only make the
144
00:07:26,600 --> 00:07:30,200
journey sweeter and smoother as
we all seek to do these things
145
00:07:30,280 --> 00:07:33,240
together, or maybe we should say
as we all seek to put on these
146
00:07:33,240 --> 00:07:36,080
things in our own lives.
And so as you worship today,
147
00:07:36,160 --> 00:07:37,880
think about the race you are
running.
148
00:07:38,040 --> 00:07:42,240
Are there well 55 T-shirts worth
of things you're trying to carry
149
00:07:42,240 --> 00:07:43,720
while you strive to live for
God?
150
00:07:43,960 --> 00:07:47,520
Or are the things you have put
on the things of God and thus
151
00:07:47,680 --> 00:07:50,080
the things that make the race
more enjoyable and more
152
00:07:50,080 --> 00:07:52,160
effective?
Your worship today should help
153
00:07:52,160 --> 00:07:54,800
you reflect on those questions
and should help you think more
154
00:07:54,800 --> 00:07:57,560
clearly about knowing what God
would have you to wear as you
155
00:07:57,560 --> 00:08:01,360
run your race.
Always, always looking to.
156
00:08:01,440 --> 00:08:04,920
Jesus Adam shared some fantastic
thoughts with us for our Sunday
157
00:08:04,920 --> 00:08:07,320
morning drive.
Now it's time for you to share
158
00:08:07,320 --> 00:08:09,160
yours.
Our discussion questions for
159
00:08:09,160 --> 00:08:14,160
this week are what do we allow
to hinder us in our race that
160
00:08:14,160 --> 00:08:17,920
would be better left behind?
What keeps us from letting go of
161
00:08:17,920 --> 00:08:22,800
those things that weigh us down
and what aspects can we build up
162
00:08:22,800 --> 00:08:26,640
or put on to aid us in our
spiritual race?
163
00:08:26,880 --> 00:08:29,520
Adam, thanks again for being on
the show today.
164
00:08:29,600 --> 00:08:33,120
I so appreciate what you shared
with us and to our listeners,
165
00:08:33,360 --> 00:08:36,760
thanks for tuning in this week.
Keep running that spiritual
166
00:08:36,760 --> 00:08:39,080
race.
Look forward to the goal and
167
00:08:39,080 --> 00:08:55,330
I'll see you Sunday.
We're here.

Adam began his work with the Central church of Christ in Paducah, Kentucky on July 1, 2018. He came to Central after preaching in Nashville, Tennessee (Lebanon Road Church of Christ) and Haleyville, Alabama (9th Avenue Church of Christ). His favorite style of preaching is to take a text and let it speak for itself.
Adam is married to the former Leah Moon. They met at Freed-Hardeman University and have been married since 1999. They are blessed with two children. Mary Carol is their adopted treasure and Turner is their God-given surprise. Leah is a homemaker who homeschooled Mary Carol and Turner all the way from kindergarten through high school. She now enjoys teaching both elementary and ladies’ Bible classes, speaking at ladies’ events, and hosting her own YouTube channel for ladies.
Adam graduated from Freed-Hardeman University, where he received a B.A. in history in 1999 and a Master of Ministry in 2003.
Before moving into the pulpit, Adam was a youth minister for about ten years and still loves helping young people. He enjoys reading American history and keeping up with the world of sports. His goal in life is to reach heaven and help as many others receive that eternal blessing. He enjoys writing and, along with several members of his family, maintains a family website, A Legacy of Faith. His favorite books of the Bible are Job, John, and James.
