Ep 24: I’d Never Do That to Jesus

Let's get into today's episode. This is episode 24. I'd never do that to Jesus. Let's go to church.

Speaker2: Are we there yet?

Speaker1: Recently. It's been the beginning of first grade for my daughter, and as we're homeschooling her, one of my responsibilities is to teach her Bible class. And in the curriculum that we've chosen to use, the material is currently going over the events leading up to the crucifixion. And we had just finished talking about and reading Matthew chapter 2726 through 31, and then he released Barabbas for them. But after having Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified, and the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around him. And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and a reed in his hand, and they knelt down before him and mocked him, saying, hail, King of the Jews! And they spat on him, and took the reed and began to beat him on the head. And after they had mocked him, they took the scarlet robe off of him, and put his own garments on him, and led him away to be crucified. After reading that passage and explaining what it meant, because after all the concepts of scourging and the crown of thorns, and the beatings and the mocking and and the robe. All of those are a little bit heavy for a six year old, and Evelyn was quiet for a few seconds. And then she said, the most innocent and the most profound thing in a way that only a child can. And well, I'll let her tell you herself. She said they were.

Speaker2: Being so mean. I would never do that to Jesus.

Speaker1: Amen, little girl. Amen. And after I dried my eyes a little bit, I encouraged her to never stop striving to make that true. I also used the opportunity to introduce her to the idea that our sin is such a huge slap in the face to Jesus. I'd never do that to Jesus. Oh, that. We all lived with that mindset and that conviction. And it's one that we see in Peter, in Matthew 2635. Peter makes the statement that even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you. And don't forget here that all the other apostles had the same thing. And while some will say that this statement was made out of brashness or maybe even arrogance, I'd like to think better of Peter because I know I've been in his shoes many times, and so have you. It makes me think of that song. Can he still feel the nails? The chorus says, can he still feel the nails? Every time I failed, does he hear the crowds cry crucify again? Am I causing him pain when I know I've got to change. Because I just can't bear the thought of hurting him? Hebrews chapter six, verses four through six says, for in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good Word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away.

Speaker1: It is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put him to open shame. I'm tremendously proud of my daughter for seeing the cruelty that Jesus went through and being repulsed by it. I want to live in a way that inspires her to continue to make the right choices. I want to be able to say in all good conscience, knowing I will stumble, but I want to be able to say that as much as it depends on me, I'd never do that to my Jesus. Well, those are my thoughts.
