Ep 4: A Word to Your Mother

A very happy Mother's Day to any who might be listening to the podcast today, and I hope you are treated deservingly this morning. And also to any sons that forgot about Mother's Day. Speaker2: Are we there yet?

Speaker1: Word to your mother. Now, just hang on with me for just a little bit. I promise we'll get to the spiritual application in just a second. Those of us in the 80s and 90s, we heard that phrase used as a way of emphasizing the truthfulness or the sincerity of a statement. And despite being the last line of Vanilla ICE's seminal work, and I only say that with the slightest hint of sarcasm, there's also a biblical aspect to this the truthfulness of the words that Jesus spoke to his mother. Isn't it interesting that the first recorded words that we find of Jesus speaking in the gospel accounts are to his mother in Luke 249, where he's talking to her and he's saying, don't you know that I must be about my father's business? It's also worth noting that some of the last words that Jesus spoke before his death were also to his mother. In John 1926 and 27, we see Jesus upon the cross, and it says, When Jesus then saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved. Standing nearby, he said to his mother, woman, behold your son. And then he said to the disciple, behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his own household. The care and the love portrayed here is astounding, but not surprising coming from our Lord.

Speaker1: And there's something profound in that. A message that good, godly mothers should be cherished. I believe it's important that we also notice that Mary's life, at least what we know of it from Scripture, seems to indicate that she was continually seeking after her son. We see in Luke two where she sought him, ultimately finding him in the temple as a young boy. And in John 19 we see her seeking him all the way to the cross. And I think it's fairly obvious that Jesus and his mother had a beautiful relationship. In Luke 251, we see how much Mary truly loved her son. Scripture tells us, and he went down with them and came to Nazareth. And he continued in subjection to them. And his mother treasured all these things in her heart. Parents. Mothers, do you treasure the memories and the things that our children do? While they're young. Mary surely did. Are the things that we cherish when they make important spiritual strides, when they choose God over the world? Or do we tend to treasure and celebrate those accomplishments which in the grand scheme of things, don't really bring them any closer to Jesus? Mary sought after her son.

Speaker1: Think of how special that relationship was, after all, to everyone else, Jesus was the Son of God, but to Mary, that was her son. Mothers, the greatest gift you can give your children is for them to genuinely see you seeking after Christ. And those of us that are blessed to have had and still have godly mothers in our lives, do we treat them like Jesus treated his? Do we honor them? Scripture tells us to husbands when we see our wives living like and seeking after Jesus as godly mothers. Do we praise them for that? Do they know how thankful you are? Because let me tell you, it's rare and it's a blessing. And if the answer to any of these questions is no, or maybe you need to say a word to your mother. Thanks, mom. Happy mother's day.
