Ep 42: Iron Mike (w/ Rodney Sills)

I've known Rodney for years. He's a fellow preacher of the gospel, a deacon in the Lord's Church, a mentor, servant, and a dear friend. I'm so thankful that rod agreed to share some thoughts with us this morning. Rodney also puts out a weekly Facebook Live on Saturday nights that many, myself included, find encouraging. Well, let's go ahead and get this show on the road, Rodney, take us on our Sunday morning drive. This is episode 42, iron Mike. Let's go to church.

Speaker2: Are we there yet?

Speaker3: You know, friend, there will be times in our lives that people let us down. You can be let down by anyone you have placed trust or expectations in, including friends, family members, colleagues, or even acquaintances when they fail to meet those expectations or commitments, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Friends, this leads me to the Jake Paul Mike Tyson fight that took place on November 15th on Netflix. Now, I must admit that I occasionally boasted to others that I didn't really care who won that fight and that it was all for publicity. However, as the fight drew closer, my dislike for Jake Paul's arrogance and my love for the possible rebound of one of my favorite champions, iron Mike Tyson, caused to, well, let's say, abandon my former stance. I began to feel the hype within me, and I eventually fell victim to believing that Mike Tyson was fighting for me. You see, I believe that Mike began to become a type of beacon for us older people that still have a heart and desire to do more and to win at times in life. For me, I begin to identify with the warrior in Mike that was still alive. Yes, many of us believed what Mike Tyson said he would do because our proof was in watching him train. Well, as you can see, I became a part of the hype, and my only positive thing to say about the fight is that I didn't have to pay for it, especially with the horrible glitchy streaming service that took place. My overall excitement began to dissipate as the fight progressed, and by around three, I felt a huge letdown and even discouragement. I literally felt disappointed about a fight that I knew ahead of time was a publicity stunt. I bought the story I trusted in Mike, and then I was horribly disappointed.

Speaker3: Fran, maybe you can relate to that. And yes, we will be disappointed by people at times, even brothers and sisters in Christ. My question for the listener at this moment is simply, have you considered the champion that you have or could have on your side in Jesus Christ? You know, he identified with us, was tempted in all ways and sin not. It appeared that he took a loss at the cross, but because he arose on the third day, he became our champion. That overcame death, and he will always be the only champion in our life that never disappoints us. Really. I mean, if that sounds good, but what's my proof text for this? Well, there are many, but for time's sake I will only share one. Listen to the words of Paul in Romans 837 through 38. Paul says no, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow. Not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. Friends, I pray that you can find Christ and make him the champion of your life he wants to be. And I pray that you have that peace in your life like he is brought to so many. You can believe the hype with Christ. You can get excited for his story, and you can find these teachings in your Bible through others that love to tell the old, old story. They love to tell the story of Jesus as we write on our hearts every word. He is the champion that never disappoints. Trust in him.
