Ep 50: A Big Heart

Let's go to church.

Speaker 2: Are we there yet?

Speaker 1: Recently, I was listening to the fully equipped podcast, and one of the hosts, Brian Dill, brought up the fun fact that a blue Whales heart is not only the biggest in the animal kingdom, but it is so big that it can actually be heard underwater from two miles away. That's impressive. And it prompted me to look up some additional information. And here's what I found. The heart of a blue whale can weigh around £400. It's about five feet tall by four feet wide, and each time that heart beats, it pumps 60 gallons of blood. And if that weren't enough, the aorta is big enough for a person to swim through. A huge heart indeed. And on the other end of the spectrum, just because I got curious, the animal with the smallest heart is something called a fairy fly, and its heart is so small that it actually requires a powerful microscope to even be able to see it. And, you know, it made me think about the phrase that we often say about people that exemplify kindness, compassion, or the love of Christ. We might say, well, that person has a big heart. And I think it's interesting that in First Kings 429, Scripture says, And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceedingly much, and a largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the seashore.

Speaker 1: Now that translation uses the phrase largeness of heart, which, you know, digging a little bit deeper and comparing some other translations, you'll see the word used synonymously with the word breadth of mind, wisdom, a deep understanding, a deep understanding of the things of God and of your fellow man. Psalm 11932 echoes that same usage when it says, I will run in the ways of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart. Now it would seem that the desire of some of the wisest men in Scripture was to have the heart and the mind of God. It's little wonder, then, that David is referred to as a man after God's own heart in first Samuel 1314. And isn't that the standard God's very own heart? I mean, if we want to talk about hearts that can be heard from a great distance away, just look at how the heart of our father and the heart of our Savior echoed down to us from heaven through Scripture. After all, John 316 says, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. Yes, we can hear the heart of our God and of our King. The question is, can he hear ours? And of course he can. But join me in the analogy for a moment, if you would.

Speaker 1: Can others hear your heart? Does it beat in the same way and for the same motives? And do we want the same things that our God wants? Philippians chapter two, verse five says, let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, a humble heart, a submissive heart, a heart that does for others, and a mind that is not conceited. So. Do you have a big heart? Because big hearts are noticeable both to God and to others. On a scale of fairy fly to Blue Whale, what does your spiritual heart look like? I hope it's closer to the latter regardless. Let our hearts beat so loudly in service to God that he can hear them, and others can hear them too. And of course, giving him all the glory. Do we have hard, unrepentant hearts, or are we quick to turn our hearts back to God? Do we sincerely strive to have the mind of Christ?
