Ep 6: Kicking the Tires

Speaker2: Are we there yet?

Speaker1: What kind of car are you driving this morning? Take a look at the odometer for me. How many miles does it have? Is it still pretty new? Or maybe it's crossed the 100,000 mile mark. Has it crossed the 200 000 mile mark? Those of you that know me know I tend to drive my cars until they just aren't drivable anymore. Think back if you would on your first vehicle. Mine was a 1998 Jeep Cherokee, and I drove that car well past 200,000 miles by the time I was done with it. It had holes rusted in the floor panels. Friends and family jokingly referred to it as the green Beauty. What was your favorite vehicle you've ever owned? I'm personally partial to a certain red Volvo station wagon that may or may not be featured in the logo. And boy, I had some great memories in those vehicles from the first car I ever owned. Learning to drive in that Jeep to driving to Niagara Falls with my dad. After picking it up for the first time, it saw me all the way through high school, college, my youth ministry, internship, some good times. And then I think about my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. You know, it saw me to my first preaching job, my first date with my wife, driving to the Smokies after our wedding, bringing home our daughter from the hospital, all of those great memories, and I hope you forgive me for waxing a little bit nostalgic. All of this to say, I appreciate a dependable car and we rely on our vehicles to get us where we need to go. We depend on them to not leave us stranded in the middle of nowhere. And when they do, or when we get stuck with a lemon, it's incredibly frustrating.

Speaker1: Before you've purchased a vehicle, or maybe before you get in one to go on a trip, do you kick the tires to make sure it's roadworthy, to make sure it's ready to go the distance? And there's a spiritual application here, I promise. Have you ever been stranded? Have you ever been let down by those around you, maybe even on the side of the road when your car breaks down? Well, for those of us that are saved, God has always and will always be there for us every mile of the way. You know, people come and go. Our situations in life might change, but he is the one true, constant. And best of all, he won't leave you stranded and he won't leave you lost either. Jesus, after all, is the way. John 14 five and six Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going. How do we know the way? And Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father but through me. No God has and will be there for his people. Christian, don't you put your faith in anyone or anything else to get you where you need to go? Heaven is our destination and our Jesus is the only one fit to get us there. Put your faith in him. Kick the tires. You'll see they check out. After all, we have places to go and things to do.
