Ep 9: A Dirty Coffee Cup

This is episode nine, a dirty coffee cup. Let's go to church.

Speaker2: Are we there yet?

Speaker1: Have you had your cup of coffee today? Are you drinking it now? If our experiences are anything alike, you might have a favorite mug that is your morning companion while you get your caffeine fix every day. Mine has a bird on it. A chickadee, to be precise. Or maybe you have a go to thermos, or a tumbler, or a Stanley Cup that you fill with coffee before you leave for work every day. And I'm about to tell on myself, so don't judge me when you're done with your cup of coffee or you come home from a long day at work, do you do that thing where you just rinse it out and put your cup on the drying rack, or do you give it a proper scrubbing after each use? I'll let you guess which one I do. While I was looking at my coffee cup the other day and I was disturbed, it was stained brown from daily use with coffee rings from top to bottom, and I'd been drinking out of that. Gross. Now, mind you, the outside looked pristine. The little chickadee, proudly perched on his branch never looked sharper, but the inside was a different story. The point is, it doesn't matter what the outside looks like, if the inside is full of filth. And Jesus spoke to this point when he reprimanded the scribes and the Pharisees. In Matthew 2325 through 28 he says, woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.

Speaker1: You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites, for you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. So you too outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. The question comes to us this morning are we like the inside of that dirty cup? Are we presenting ourselves as if we are perfect? But on the inside we are full of sin and deceit and decay. If we're honest, that can be pretty humbling. But the good news, and there is good news is that if we are faithful, if we are repentant, if we are obedient, the blood of Jesus will cleanse us of that filth. John one verse seven. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His son cleanses us from all sin. Turn to him this morning, be washed in the blood. Oh, and when you get home, give that coffee cup a good cleaning. It probably needs it. I'm Daniel Delp, and these have been some thoughts for your Sunday morning drive. Let's worship our God.
